I only had about 30 minutes to putt as I had to attend a dinner with a friend, so on the way to dinner I stopped off at Rancho Park with my putter and a couple balls.
I started off hitting some 3 foot putts, which turned into 5 footers, which turned into 10 and 15 footers. I like the way that I am putting the ball. I no longer have any fear of hitting the ball past the hole. I actually prefer hitting the ball a little too firm and having it roll past the cup if it misses. Mind you, I am not 'jammin' the putts - just hitting them more solid. I find that almost 25-30% (1 in 4 or 1 in 3) more of my putts will actually go in if I hit it with a speed that goes past the cup; whereas 0% of my putts will go in if it does not reach the cup.
I also have started to take a good line with the same stroke versus trying to cozy the ball up to the hole. I think most amateurs try and feel the putt into the hole and do not pay attention to the line of their stroke, stance, etc. I am trying to pay a lot of attention to reading the break, finding my line, taking my stance in proportion with that line and making a good stroke on that line. It makes for a more consistent roll and more consistent results. I trust my stroke more and more each day, so if I miss a putt it is most likely a result of mis-reading the break vs. putting with a poor stroke - and learning how to better read the break with more and more experience is a lot easier than fixing a broken putting stroke.
I am feeling good about my trusty putter. However, I still have my eye on the Odyssey i series #9 in black - :)
